The world is shocked and somewhat confused to learn of the death of the world’s most wanted man Osama Bin Laden. On social networking sites this is the topic of conversation whether it is Twitter or Facebook. While many are celebrating the demise of the leader of the ‘Taliban’, many are yet to be swayed into thinking that he is indeed dead. People refuse to believe this based on several previous death rumours surrounding the enigmatic figure over the past few years. This enigma is so strong that several rumours and conspiracies began to surface literally hours after news of Osama's demise, the creepiest one being: 'Hitler pronounced dead May 1st 1945, Osama Bin Laden pronounced dead May 1st 2011, the Illuminate formed May 1st 1776. We recently celebrated the May Day holidays and when a plane is crashing the pilot will say May Day! May Day!' This is just an example the kind of conspiracies that has already surfaced and I believe this is only the start of several unbelieveable rumours regarding the death of this influential man.
Whilst these rumours and conspiracies continue to carry weight and we continue to wait for pictures of a dead Osama Bin Laden, let’s look at what the death of the man means to the world: peace, stability, the spread of democracy, withdrawal from Afghanistan, reprisal attacks? All these questions are being asked because of the man that was finger pointed to be the mastermind behind the September 11 2001 attacks on the USA and several other US interests as well as the killing of several people (majority being Muslims) around the world. President George W Bush and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair tried their best to catch him dead or alive. They spent the best part of 8 years looking for Osama Bin Laden, diverting to Iraq to catch and murder Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein in their search for world terrorists, still not finding Osama. Yet it was President Obama who took office some two and a half years prior who claimed his scalp. Let me just say that this ‘achievement’ could secure President Obama’s second term in office in 2012.
For the past several months we saw the Arab world rally for democracy and an end to dictatorship rule in their countries. Will the death of Osama Bin Laden further this cause? Dictatorships and the man were not really connected, as one ‘dictator’ President Gaddafi blamed the Taliban for starting riots in his country ‘Libya’ so it will be interesting to see what effect Osama Bin Laden's death has on world politics, the Taliban and relations between western countries and countries such as Afghanistan, Pakistan, Sudan, Somalia and others. Will the Americans and the British now withdraw soldiers from Afghanistan faster as they already got their man?
Only time will tell before we see the significance of ‘no more Bin Laden’ but I believe this is a huge stride towards winning the ‘war against terror’ on the part of the Americans. However we will definitely see reprisal attacks from the ‘Taliban’ or fanatics as some people regard Osama Bin Laden as a hero hence the question sign at the end of the title of this article. Even though this guy is ‘gone’ his influence will still remain however vast or small it might be. Many people will feel more safe while otthers will not. It would be good to see a world where there is a reduction in wars and the killing of innocent people. Another thing, look out for a film about ‘The hunt and capture of Osama Bin Laden’, this will go to Hollywood and the Americans will be the heroes. In years to come this could be folklore in US and western history, somewhat of a religion where the evil people are the terrorists and the killing of Osama Bin Laden by the Americans will be the good overcoming the evil, well that’s how I think it could like this hundreds of years from now however twisted it may seem!
After saying all this, people are still yearning to see pictures of a dead Osama Bin Laden before believing the Americans indeed got his head. Let's see what's next regarding this story.
