Poor working class people, mainly children caused mayhem across Britain after a police shooting a few days ago. The protests quickly changed from a possible police brutality case to a national debate about government cuts.
Many watched the biggest smash and grab film ever on their tv screens with burning cars, houses and smashed windows familiar sights across the country.
Unsurprisingly many are scratching their heads and arguing with each other asking the same question...Why did all this happen, why? Many of us took the easy route and blame gangs for the riots. Other culprits were the police for not doing their jobs to protect us the citizens, greedy kids, irresponsible parents, low morale, government cuts, ethnic minorities, immigrants etc.
My questions are: Why did all these people get up and started looting?
Why the domino effect?
The police were meant to be protecting the community or (communities if you like). Why didn't they protect people's homes, churches, mosques and Sikh temples? It seemed they were only protecting businesses (they were being looted duh!) which aren't the only buildings in the communities. Why didn't they also protect people who were being robbed?
Did a lot of wealthy people riot as well?
Could all this really be built up frustration by the youngsters and the unemployed?
If it turned out that the police killed Mark Duggan in cold blood, illegally. Will that police officer be charged for murder?
Why were so many kids on the streets during the mayhem, where were the parents?
How many stupid people will blame this on black people who initially started the protests after a black family's son (alleged gangster) was killed by the police arguably in cold blood.
Not so long ago there were similar protests by students when the government announced the increase of university fees. We watched in shock when students or whoever they were went as far as damaging the car Prince Charles and his wife were travelling in and jeered the royal couple. People were breaking into stores, banks and caused other mayhem. These protests or mini riots were quickly squashed by the police, erased from our memories it seems.
Over the past few months we saw in the media the announcement of job cuts and issues which normally doesn't affect too much the wealthier parts of society for example tuition fees for university has more than tripled, Value After Tax increasing, several job cuts then increase in bank bonuses. All these measures taken by the authorities ruling over the people has and is continuing to create the biggest evidence of financial inequality among the country's citizens.
It seems as if the 'have nots' were stealing from the have's which begs the question, what about people's morales? At the same time many rioters seemed to have done it for the thrill as they were obviously enjoying it, protesting without a cause it seemed.
These riots proved to be a class issue caused by several issues including the ones I mentioned before. Many of us, some detached from society will simply point fingers without even saying there is a lack of stability in the homes of working class people which could be apart of the problem.
Poverty, crime and their causes among Britain's lower class were simply swept under the carpet until now when for some far fetched strange reason people started to smash and grab from high street shops. I see on television news people of different colours and backgrounds (depending on the demographics of the community) of the working class looting and destroying property. Most of this appear so senseless that the prime minister labelled the perpetrators as 'sick'.
These riots are more than embarrassing to the country as the world is watching. In less than a year London will host the 2012 Olympics? The images we saw on tv doesn't look like a tourist destination nevertheless a place to state the biggest multi sports even in the world.
There is a looming economic crisis ahead of us and these riots could prove to be a snapshot of how difficult things could be in the future if there are no improvement in the lives of the working class.
I will sum up this piece by saying that those robbing and burning people's properties and endangering lives should be ashamed of themselves. When compared to riots in other countries the casualties are low, however there should be some morale left in is humans and like the politicians and everyone else involved, the parents have a lot to answer for.
What I will say to everyone is, treat others how you would like to be treated, how's that?
