Wal-Mart (Asda's Owner) Sells Guns

Just in case you did not know, US company Wal-Mart, labelled the discount retail giant has a secret, well its not a secret anymore, they sell guns. The selling of guns is normal activity in the US; it is like buying biscuits. It is very easy to get hold of a mass killing tool in this country thanks to Wal-Mart and other gun selling businesses. This company is known for the selling of assault weapons in the past, these weapons can kill people en mass in a one killing spree. This same company who took over Asda (the UK supermarket chain) in 1999 is not a stranger to controversy as they have several lawsuits, they abuse workers rights and they were alleged to have used sweatshops. The largest gun retailer in the US operates like a monopoly where they have stores all over the country, forcing little corner shops out of business. Wal-Mart is reported to sell 60% of non grocery merchandise. It seems that whatever Wal-Mart touches turns into gold as immediately after they took over Asda, the UK retailer's profits jumped 3% without them opening new stores.

Increased Gun Fears

Americans are worried that the company could indeed sell guns to terrorists jeopardising the very lives of the American citizens. This is indeed a logical way of thinking, however TWRToday is worried that these guns could end up in the hands of more young misguided black males/females (and others) who are too quick to harm or even murder their fellow humans. This is very worrying as this easy access to ammunition will make people live in fear. I understand that Wal-Mart is operating as a business and money is the only important factor, however what happens to corporate responsibility? So they are selling the people food then selling them guns to kill themselves. Is that helping the communities? There was news that the company will stop selling guns in about 1,000 (about 1/3) of their stores replacing guns with sporting goods. When TWRToday first found out about this, we were very happy thinking it was good news until I found out the answer. This is a quote from Wal-Mart's spokeswoman Jolanda Stewart 'This decision is based on diminished customer relevancy and demand in these markets'. This means that the demand was low i.e. people was not buying them in those stores that's why they ceased sale. To make sense of it all then they would double their gun stock if demand was high, right?

Guns in Our Society

I understand that in certain societies, guns are inevitable and essential to keep that society or establishment running (in other words to maintain it). On the other hand people in such high places should have the common sense to understand what guns do to people. Apart from buying guns for hunting, (lets stick to the point here) guns causes loved ones to die, family and friends to mourn, people to live in fear, countries to destabilise, more extortion, more illegal drug trade, more prisons, more lawyers, more judges (I'm beginning to see a pattern here!)

What Can we do About This?

Well if Wal-Mart stopped selling guns in 1000 of its stores due to a lack of demand then what we as a people can do is.stop living in fear and STOP buying the 'killing machines' altogether. That should put the gun industry out of business! Then again countries like the Us are built on wars and you have the right to carry guns (in the US constitution) so this might go on forever if the people do not take a stand. Then the gun manufacturers might stop or cut down on production as the demand would fall dramatically. If all else fails then we can make someone else really rich by ignoring these big companies who sells weapons of mass destruction and support the 'up and coming' morale retail giant. It could be you, we need competition in these sectors so go and start a retail giant people!

The United Kingdom banned guns since 1996 making it illegal to carry guns in the country. This was after a mass murder in Scotland where several children were killed in the one gun incident. There is still a gun problem in Britain in the black community but another school tragedy such as the one in Scotland 1996 hasn't happened since the ban. Despite several school shootings such as 'Columbine 99' they did not even think of banning guns in the US or even changing the gun laws. One thing I definitely learnt is that money is worth more than humanity in certain places.

What's Wrong With us?

Several gun manufacturers and companies earn their money by exporting guns to 'third world' countries such as places in Africa, Jamaica, Columbia and Brazil (places where black people are in abundance). This will result in the destabilisation of these countries. TWR believes that some of these causes are political, however we cannot blame politics alone for the mass genocide of black people. Fair enough they make guns but we are the ones killing ourselves with them. We are the ones pulling the triggers wounding and intending to kill each other. I know it's daft so there is a huge problem in the minds of Africans worldwide and this must be addressed. This must not go on.

Another interesting fact is that Wal-Mart is growing rapidly, looking to take over Europe like they did in North America. They recently withdrew from Germany after spending eight years learning the market nevertheless they still have Asda in the UK. They are looking to expand all around Europe. Fair enough but what happens if the European Union (EU) changed its laws on guns in Europe? (Making guns available to everyone) and Wal-Mart buys out Tesco, Sainsbury's and the other big chains throughout Europe and becomes a monopoly in the EU?
