Is Shopping the new religion?

Article Image

Fellow consumers, are we shopping too much? Are we living within our means? Is shopping now a religion?

Shopping has become a way of life as we all need daily necessities, more than a hobby to most of us we often buy items that we dont need. Ladies especially will go as far as saying shopping is a therapy and they do it to make them feel better if they're having a bad day.

Many of us have become a bunch of shopoholics will buy anything we see on tv adverts: the latest gadgets, video games, clothes, perfume are all but a few of the things we have to get no matter if we need them or not.Consumerism it seems has gotten out of hand where we will get a new version of, say a mobile phone every year without fail even  when there is only a small difference between the latest smart phone and the 'old one' you bought 12 months ago. Two new exciting new applications and that's all we need to know to go and get this new and often expensive item.
As people spend more each year markets will grow and to maintain these growth trends, brands will do anything to entice us the buyers. Growth markets will create new jobs, people will have more disposable income and will spending more thus benefiting the economy. However do we really have to be gullable to market trends and fashion at any cost?

Many of us fail to realise that it is often our shopping habits that carry us into debt, with credit cards and bank overdrafts the main sources which feeds the hobby or habit as I'd prefer to call it. I know people who go shopping on their pay day every month without fail to buy similar items such as clothes to bolster their swagger. Why is this the case? Has shopping become the new religion or our guilty secret that takes our money? I ask this because half the time we don't necessarily 'need' the things we crave for. A good TV advert is enough encouragement for many of us to splash half if not all of our monthly pay on luxury items then complain about the recession and take out a pay day loan to cover your bills! Is that clever?

Obviously all of our financial worries surely cannot be blamed on our shopping tendencies. Many of us who are in employment and financially responsible for others such as children and loved ones find it very difficult to even treat ourselves to anything worthwhile, which is really sad.  If we work for our money and decide to buy a gadget or nything else for that matter, who's business is it to tell us what to buy with out hard earned cash. The problem is when your purchasing habits get out of control and you start borrowing money to feed your habit, look familiar?

We live in a world where if we're not careful we can become trapped or enslaved by these credit companies (banks, pay day loans) paying back loans for years, which could mean several decades. After saying that the world is changing and our priorities or should I say necessities change over time. Many of us are technologically lead. We want the latest I-Phone with the latest gadgets yet don't even use most if not all of their features. We'll simply get it as a fashion statement. The worst thing about this statement is that you more than likely couldn't afford it in the first place and are now having problems paying for the item. In this age of credit long gone are the days of 'live within your means'.
