I wrote this essay when I was 14 years old. I found it after digging up some of my old paper work to literally throw away as rubbish. I read it again and it amazes me how my mind state was actually stable at that time. I thought to myself I had to share it with my readers. Over a decade ago I wrote this essay arguing that 'Television does more harm than good' it supported my points against television as a beneficial tool and more of a destructive device. Here goes...
People will watch the television for various reasons whether it is to see the latest news, talk shows or entertainment. It is seen by most people on earth and is a very popular means of sending and receiving information. I believe that television does more harm than good as it can influence people to be violent as well as promiscuous. It would influence someone to do the worst of atrocities such as murder or rape amongst other disgusting actions.
Television is also a time wasting device which could deter people from actually going on to find a job or do something constructive which could help improve their life ambitions. Television could influence people to be violent as it shows violent movies which involves guns and drugs, which people will be motivated by and carry these actions out in real life. After seeing a violent movie someone could try and get a gun or a knife and murder someone without a cause. This is happening in today's society and was happening in the past, however I believe television makes it easier as it glorifies violence, which will definitely influence children.
Television will affect children the most as they are the most vulnerable as they will practice the violence they see on television whether it is wrestling or gunfights. Violence will become apart of child's life if they are exposed to several acts of f cruelty on television.
It is evident that television is very influential to people as when people buy for example clothes they are most likely to see it advertised on TV. Television can be informative as it does educate people. There are educational programs which informs people in different subjects such as geography and different animals etc. Television also keeps us up to date with the news visually, however I still believe the problems of television outweigh its benefits. I say this because there are too many cases of violence, foul language and foul characters which will be copied by people, especially the children.
