The margin of winning and losing is increasingly getting smaller and it has come to light that several sportsmen from baseball, to soccer to athletics are cheating to get an unfair advantage over their competitors. Recently world Olympic 100m champion Justin Gatlin has tested positive for testosterone in April of 2006 then subsequently banned for eight years. Just before he tested positive for the substance, he tied the world record of 9.77 seconds with Asafa Powell.
Gatlin is not the first to take banned drugs in sports and he will definitely not be the last. Look at Ben Johnson, he was found guilty and banned for taking a banned substance following his Olympic win and world record. That was 20 years ago and it is still happening. Others implicated in sports for drug taking are; Shane Warne (Australian cricketer) Marion Jones, Tim Montgomery among others. Most of these sports personalities remain adamant that they are innocent.
You have to win to be successful in anything in life and in sports this is fact is more evident than others. However where is the dignity of these people? Haven't they got any shame whatsoever? These people will go and collect gold medals and smile, some even cry, when they know deep down that they shouldn't be the winners.
My Take on The Whole Thing
In this life, winning is everything, people will remember the winners, not the losers and people will cheat to better themselves in whatever they do. I see this no better or worse than 'white collar crime', where executives are getting away with tax fraud etc. I believe the cheats and criminals we don't hear of, the ones that get away are the perfect cheats. I bet that there is some famous athlete who' now retired (or still playing) who took all sorts to win and never get found out. That person might have all the medals and accolades, showing it to their folks, which they know they did not deserve.
I must say that some of these accusations are false as with everything in life. For example, earlier this year I received a letter that said I owed £150 for a parking ticket. The time and place they said I parked on an unauthorised street I was at work. Therefore their must be some flaws in the Parking system. I still had to pay the fine! Straying from the point but you know the point I'm trying to make. Every system has its flaws. I believe we are living in a society where people just love to see others fall from the highest of heights. They will build you up then bring you right down. I'm sure you can think of some examples.
The genuine cheaters should be definitely condemned and ostracised from sports as they are taking the place of someone who trains so hard but did not make it due to some drug taking monster that finished before them in a race. At the same time I will say drug taking in sports should be blamed on everyone in the system. Yes it is everyone's fault! From the athlete to the coaches, the doctors, the media and the others I don't know about (the whole system). For some reason I do not think this is the end of drug scandals in sports.
